Obituary of Sidney Gitter

Sidney Gitter of Yonkers, NY passed away on April 22, 2020 after a brief illness. Sidney was a lifelong New Yorker, a devoted family man, a devout Christian, and a diehard fan of the New York Yankees. Sidney was born on July 12, 1936 in The Bronx to Ben and Anna Gitter. Sidney attended local schools and after graduating from Morris High School, he served his country well as a member of the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. While stationed in England, Sidney met and married Rosalind (Lever) Gitter and they resided in the town of West Drayton. After completing his tour of duty, Sidney and Rosalind moved to the United States and settled in The Bronx where they raised their four children. Sidney was a Journeyman Electrician and a proud member of Local Three of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Sidney worked on many construction projects in New York City, including The World Trade Center, the HSBC Bank Building. Sidney was a man of God, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of White Plains. Sidney served his church as a member of the choir, the church council, and the altar guild. Sidney was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Anna, and his first wife Rosalind. Sidney is survived by his wife Ruth Gitter whom he married in 2005, and his children and their spouses Vivienne and Thomas Bolger, Fonda and Kurt Smith, Dwayne and Maria Gitter, and Kevin and Lillian Gitter. Sidney is also survived by ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A private service and burial will be held for Sidney on Tuesday, April 28th, 2020. A memorial service and reception will be scheduled at a future date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to NewYork-Presbyterian Lawrence Hospital’s COVID-19 Healthcare Workers Fund, in memory of Sidney Gitter.
