Obituary of Helen T. Gorman

Helen Theresa Gorman, born February 23, 1926, passed away on March 25, 2020 at Seton Village in Nanuet, NY. Helen was the daughter of Frank and Mary Gorman, a sister to two brothers, and an aunt to Maureen and Helen. She held a doctorate in Administration from New York University, a masters degree in English Language and Literature from Fordham University, and is an alumna of Cathedral High School and Ascension School in New York City. Helen (Sister Marie Helen) was a Sister of Charity of New York from 1945 until 1981. She taught in elementary schools; Visitation, St. Francis Xavier, St. John the Evangelist, St. Barnabas and Elizabeth Seton School. She taught High School English courses at Cathedral High School, Blessed Sacrament HS, Spellman High School and St. Raymond’s Academy. In addition, she taught at the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Fordham University, before going into International Education Development. Professionally, Dr. Gorman served as a Lead Peer Reviewer for the Council on Accreditation for Child and Family Services in New York. Between the years of 1995 and 2000, she served as a Quality Assurance Administrator for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami, from 1983 to 1997. She worked with immigrants to help them get benefits and adjust to life in Miami. Prior to that, Dr. Gorman was a Principal and Senior Level Administrator at St. Sergius High School in Florida. Helen was wise, determined and passionate about civil rights and social justice. She was a loving, kind, thoughtful friend and a valued mentor. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.
