Obituary of James "Jim" V. Yedowitz
James V. Yedowitz passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at the age of 70, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
James (Jim) was a loving husband, beloved father and devoted coach.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Anne, of 41 years, his four children, Glenn (Garry Corrigan), Jamie (Jacob Freeman), Emily (Donal Crampton), and Daniel (Meaghen Marrama), and his eight cherished grandchildren, Molly, Caitlyn, TJ, Connor, Matty, Cecilia, Aiden, and Liam.
A lifelong resident of Yonkers, James was born on March 30, 1948, as the youngest of the 5 children of Arthur and Marion Yedowitz. Jim is survived by his brothers Arthur Edwards (Elizabeth), Raymond (Mark), and John (Linda). He is predeceased by his sister Marianne (Al Myslicki).
Jim was a graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School, class of 1966 and Manhattan College, class of 1970. At both schools Jim ran on the track teams. He was a captain of the team his senior year at Manhattan. Track continued to be an important part of his life for the rest of his life.
Jim taught briefly in the Yonkers Public Schools before moving to the Rye City School District in 1975 where he taught until 2008. He was a middle school and high school health and physical education teacher. While he was enthusiastic about his teaching, his true passion was on the track. He coached and inspired hundreds of athletes throughout his career. Jim was so dedicated to his passion that he continued to coach despite his illness and even gave coaching instructions from his hospital bed a few hours before his untimely death.
Jim loved to garden, golf, and travel, especially to a casino!
He was known for his honesty, witty humor, dedication to his family and a true love of life. He loved God and his family and had an eternally optimistic point of view. He approached his cancer diagnosis fully believing he would overcome this disease and continue to live life to its fullest.
