Berthe Van Willis was born July 13, 1922 in Neptune, New Jersey to the late Granville and Elizabeth Jones. She was raised and loved by her doting Grandma. After leaving the state of New Jersey, she moved to New York to pursue a nursing career. She worked at Mount Vernon Hospital, Lawrence Hospital, and Bellevue Hospital. While pursuing her nursing career, Berthe married Roy Van Willis and from this union had one child, Sharon. Later, Berthe left the nursing profession to work at New York University Dental School as an X-Ray Technician.
Berthe was an accomplished seamstress and craftswoman. She also loved reading and traveling. Her passion for travel took her to many interesting places, such as Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. She fostered that love for traveling to her grandchildren. She was a caring, intelligent, strong-willed mother who gave and wanted the best for her children, extended children and grandchildren.
On Sunday June 2, 2013 at the age of 90, Berthe departed this life quietly to her heavenly reward. Berthe is survived by her daughter, Sharon Wilson; son-in-law Ernest Wilson; Grandchildren Celeste and John Wilson; brothers, Eric Jones, Frank Jones, David Jones; nephews, Eric Robinson, Earl Jones; and many loving and dear friends.
A Memorial Gathering will take place at the funeral home on Saturday June 8, 2013 from 2-4pm. A Religious service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. with Fr. Daniel Ulloa officiating.
